Daily Hive Editorial

Role: National Staff Writer

Manager: Managing Editor, Daily Hive

Department: Daily Hive Editorial

Location: BC, AB or ON

Salary Range: $55,000 - $60,000

Who We Are
ZoomerMedia owns and operates media across all platforms — TV, radio, print and digital — through leading brands: blogTO, Daily Hive, Curiocity, The Peak, MobileSyrup, Vision TV, The New Classical 96.3 FM, Zoomer Radio, Zoomer Magazine, the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP), and more. Founded by television and media icon Moses Znaimer in 2008, Zoomer is a multiplatform media company devoted to creating content and experiences for Canada's most powerful audiences: the 18.1 million people aged 45-plus aka "Zoomers", and the 15.1 million Millennials and Gen Zs, coincidentally also called Zoomers, who follow in their footsteps.

Curiocity Media Group (CMG) , part of ZoomerMedia, is one of Canada’s leading digital media publishers, helping millions of people discover the best of their city and beyond through engaging, hyper-local content and brand partnerships. We combine editorial excellence, data-driven storytelling, and a distinctly fun, approachable voice to deliver campaigns that perform for both clients and audiences.

About the Role

As a National Staff Writer, you'll help define the voice of Daily Hive across Canada. You'll chase stories with impact, break down complex issues for a digital audience, and produce compelling journalism that people want to read and share. You will come up with original ideas and get familiar with our ongoing successful formats

The ideal candidate learns quickly and has good pattern recognition. They understand data and analytics tracking and are familiar with Search Engine Optimization. They should be organized and work with our local desks. An understanding of Google Discover is an added bonus.

The national writer will cover a wide range of topics, from major national stories and policy shifts to uniquely Canadian cultural moments, with accuracy, speed, and personality. This role demands strong editorial judgment, a digital-first mindset, and the ability to balance quick-turn news hits with deeper enterprise features.

Experience supporting video shoots through camera operation, lighting, audio setup, or production assistance is considered a strong asset.

What You’ll Do

  • Pitch, research, and write timely stories on major Canadian news, trends, and issues.
  • Respond quickly to developing stories, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and speed.
  • Craft articles optimized for Canada's online audiences, including SEO-friendly headlines, engaging hooks, and formats.
  • Create articles based on breaking news and the “after-story.”
  • Partake in maintaining a team calendar of upcoming themes and events that could be covered
  • Spot national conversations unfolding online and turn them into compelling, timely stories.
  • Ensure accuracy, fairness, and adherence to Daily Hive's editorial standards.
  • Work closely with the National team and broader editorial team to refine pitches, angles, and story execution.
  • Build relationships with experts, officials, and community voices across Canada.
  • Monitor web and social performance and adjust content strategies based on audience engagement and analytics
  • Attend events, previews, and openings, creating content in real time or shortly after, with flexibility for evenings and weekends (always for fun)
  • Build relationships with venues, PR reps, and event organizers as a trusted, professional representative of the brand.
  • Collaborate with our editorial, social, and video teams, giving and receiving feedback, and helping test new ideas and series.
  • Assist our video team by writing scripts for your articles (a few each week). Being comfortable with being on screen is an added advantage, but not a mandatory requirement.

The responsibilities outlined in this job description are not exhaustive and are subject to change based on business needs, organizational priorities, and the employee’s development. The employee may be asked to take on additional tasks or responsibilities as required.

What You Bring

  • 4+ years in a newsroom or digital media environment.
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to write clean, compelling copy under tight deadlines.
  • Comfort with CMS platforms, analytics tools, and social media ecosystems
  • A deep understanding of Canadian news, politics, culture, and regional dynamics.
  • Adaptability is key. The media is constantly evolving.

About the Role

The Online Editor, West is responsible for editing articles written by CMG's Canadian writers prior to publication. This role is the last line of defence before a story goes live — catching factual, structural, grammatical, and style issues, applying Canadian Press (CP) style consistently, and ensuring every piece meets Canadian journalistic standards for accuracy, fairness, and attribution. The ideal candidate has a sharp eye for detail, a strong grasp of CP style, and sound news judgment.

  • Fact-check names, titles, dates, figures, and claims; flag and resolve discrepancies with writers before publication.
  • Review copy for grammar, spelling, clarity, tone, and readability, tightening or restructuring where needed without losing the writer's voice.
  • Verify stories are free of libel, defamation, and other legal risk, escalating concerns as appropriate.
  • Write and edit SEO-friendly, accurate headlines and meta descriptions consistent with brand voice.
  • Confirm proper attribution, sourcing, and permissions for quotes, statistics, and third-party material.
  • Coordinate with writers and section editors to resolve outstanding questions quickly ahead of publish.
  • Maintain and help evolve CMG's internal style guide as CP style and brand conventions evolve.
  • Flag recurring writer errors or training gaps to the National Online Editor

What You Bring

  • 2+ years of professional editing experience, ideally in digital news, journalism, or online media.
  • Demonstrated working experience with WordPress.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Canadian Press (CP) Style.
  • An ongoing understanding of the topics we cover (including elections)
  • Strong understanding of Canadian journalistic standards and ethics (accuracy, fairness, attribution, avoiding libel).
  • Exceptional grammar, spelling, and proofreading skills, with an eye for detail under deadline pressure.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment and is adaptable to changing priorities
  • Experience editing for a digital-first, SEO-aware publication is an asset.
  • Comfortable using a CMS and collaborating with remote writers across time zones.
  • Post-secondary education in journalism, communications, English, or a related field preferred.
  • Familiarity with Canadian cities, culture, and current events is an asset.
